Shrigley's thumb
A massive thumbs up in central London, perfectly fitting to the time we are living in on more the initial front the artist intended for his fourth plinth commission. The huge presence on Trafalger square is a constant sarcastic reminder of how dire the times are and how defiantly amused we can be to get through it. Shrigley is known for his comedic stance on some really hard hitting issues and this fourth plinth commission is no different.
Turning the corner into the square you are met with the usual commanding resident that is the magnificent Lord Nelson atop his column. Accompanied by his lions and the surrounding constant fantastic three plinths along with the newest edition of this 'positive' presence. His style of satirical content has been magnificently capped off with this impressive, passive response to the wonderful world around us.
After taking a couple of thumb themed selfies with my partner, with the thumb itself, it was time to move on. But, it is warming to know that out there, there is a massive thumb, leading the way through this all around uncertain time we find ourselves in. Thank you Shrigley.
